IN MEMORIAM VERNON HANDLEY
Tasmin writes:
I heard the sad news that my dear friend and colleague Vernon
Handley died Wednesday, 10th September, in the morning.
'Tod', as he was affectionately known in the music profession, made my very
first recordings with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and over
the years I gave a great many performances with him of concerti such as
Elgar, Bruch, Brahms, Sibelius, Finzi, Bruch Scottish Fantasy, Lalo
Symphonie Espagnol and Dvorak.
He was a champion on British music, a wonderful conductor, consummate
professional and an inspiring person with whom to work. He had an array of
very funny anecdotes and jokes which he would bring out in rehearsal if ever
the mood needed lightening up a little!
We will all miss him greatly.

PRESS RELEASE from ITV (June 5th 2008) |
Tasmin Little is one of Britain’s best known concert violinists and has developed a reputation as an audacious player who is not afraid to venture into unexplored areas of the violin repertoire.
Tasmin Little is now ready to take the next step of her career. This South Bank Show witnesses the huge challenge she has set herself as she embarks on a unique new journey that will bring her closer to audiences than ever before.
Tasmin’s revolutionary project The Naked Violin was a huge success and boldly embraced the internet when she offered up a free downloadable recital. (Not even Radiohead went that far, asking people to pay what they felt appropriate when offering their recent album on the internet).
Prompted by the success of the internet project The South Bank Show follows her as she performs a series of concerts in unlikely locations at grass roots level, including a homeless hostel in Brighton, Belmarsh Prison and a Power Station in Scotland.
The genesis for the project came after busking outside Waterloo Station last year. She was surprised by the reaction she got which served to remind her that there is a vast untapped audience for classical music in need of coaxing in the right direction.
The South Bank Show also sees Tasmin Little making another departure from her more conventional role as a performer, with her conducting debut with the London Mozart Players.
Another string to her bow is as the Artistic Director of this year’s Spring Sounds Festival in Stratford-upon-Avon where she premieres a new work by the composer Roxanna Panufnik.

Tasmin Little:
The South Bank Show
ITV1, 10.45pm
Along with her talent, the violinist Tasmin Little has an abundance of energy and self-confidence. Not content with sawing away at a few tried-and-tested concertos on the concert circuit, she gets in her car and goes off to play for small groups in prisons, hospitals, hospices, homeless shelters and power stations. Her website, tasminlittle.org.uk, encourages people to download her music for free and has already had 250,000 hits, and now she is trying her hand at conducting as well as running the Spring Sounds Festival at Stratford. “I like doing things differently,” she says.

SUNDAY TV Choice - The Daily Telegraph
The South Bank Show
ITV1, 10.45pm
Tasmin Little, one of Britain’s pre-eminent violinists, gets the South Bank Show treatment in this inspiring look at her musical career, which she describes as “one steady rise”. After entering the Yehudi Menuhin School at the age of eight, Little was a finalist in the 1982 Young Musician of the Year competition and went on to become one of Britain’s best-known soloists. Her glittering career now sees her conducting for the first time and focusing her energies on promoting the value of music to all corners of society. This film follows her as she plays in schools, prisons, and even a Scottish power station. If Little is plugging anything, it’s simply her guileless passion for music. RC |

HIT
TOTAL on Tasmin's site has now reached 350.000
site visitors, Thanks. (24/08/2008)
The site in January was absolutely overwhelmed with demand for
downloads - no wonder - more than 6000 sites worldwide were
linking to Tasmin's story, and we were getting heaps
of visitors from around the globe. We were lucky to be offered
the services of a specialist streaming company, IFDNRG, who coped with the demand of downloads wonderfully.
On Sunday morning (Jan 20th), for instance, IFDNRG servers delivered 260 Mb/sec after Tasmin's appearance on
BBC1 - for three hours. Phenominal streaming levels without
breakdowns! There were more than 6000 logins between 9am
and 12am. And download requests from as far away as Equatorial
New Guinea and Mongolia. Visitors
from well over 100 countries have now logged in. IFDNRG have published a case study of the amazing download levels
of Tasmin's Free Offer - which got very close to the download
demands experienced by their servers for the Scottish Football
Cup.
Enjoy your downloads, but, please, also complete Tasmin's
challenge!
